L'Afrique C'est Chic - Geneva African Fashion Market 2016

L’Afrique C’est Chic, c’était chic!

As our followers already know, Calabash has the ambition to show another side of Africa through music, art & fashion. So not long ago we decided to go and visit „L’Afrique C’est Chic“.

Although it was a rainy Saturday in Geneva at the end of April, the sun was definetly shining in the halls of the Pavillon Sicli where the 2nd edition of the fashion event L'Afrique C'est Chic took place. It was a beautiful happening where more than 30 exhibitor showed their work.

The first highlight could be found already before the entrance with the food stand by Serafine Food serving a delicious variety of Moroccan and Cameroonian dishes. The fact that the stand was packed until they were completely sold out showed the quality of the meals.

As soon as we entered the hall we were lost in fascination by the originality and also the contemporary swag of all the displayed products. The whole place was set up as a market where you had the chance to root around for whatever you were looking for.

Catched by the energie while walking within the „Chic" area, this was even only an appetizer. The „Choc“ was waiting for us in the second floor with the creations of the designers: DENT DE MAN, I AM ISIGO, KENNETH IZE, LE MARCHÉ NOIR, MYRIAM MAXO, REVALDI HOUSE, ROSA PALHARES and XULY BËT. As a crowning final we attended the „Choc“ catwalk with the 8 selected designers.

We definitely spend a great time in Geneva, but let's stop the writing and let the pix speak for themselves!

Viva Con Agua Allstars: International Hip Hop Collab "SEMA - Say it!"

It was back in March when our man Oibelart, one-third of the Calabash team, visited Uganda along with the Viva Con Agua famliy having a mission: sensitise the people concerning water and sanitariness topics through art and music. Viva Con Agua gathered quite a few artists from Africa and Europe for this beautiful project.

Beside painting walls with e.g. important hygienics messages for kids and giving workshops, music was the main focus and the musicians among the artists played different shows and even participated at two national music festivals organised by Viva Con Agua Kampala.

Another product of this coming-together is an international Hip Hop collabo track with the title "Sema - Say It!". The song features appearances by German rapper Megaloh, Kenyan artist Octopizzo, Maro and Bobi Wine outta Uganda, Swiss allrounder Knackeboul and was produced by the Ghanaian Stallion. The Swahili vocal sample Sema used by the German producer means say it and delivered already the message for the track.

Check out the visuals below and make sure you cop in at your online store of trust! It's a hit!

Thabiso Phepeng - Schoffel Art Exhibition

For the February edition of the monthly Schoffel Art exhibition, the Switzerland based South African artist Thabiso Phepeng was invited to present his work. The display with the slogan “Mark Making” took place at Kafi Schoffel in the old town of Zurich.
We attended the vernissage and met a very cheerful Thabiso whose paintings were hanging all over the walls of the charming and old-established restaurant. Check the pictures below for a visual impression of the event and the artist’s work.

Afro Pfingsten 2015

As Swiss residents we also like to keep you posted bout things going down in our country whenever something happens in relation to african music.
Last weekend the Afro Pfingsten took over Winterthur, a town near to Zurich, as usual at Pentecoast. Pfingsten is actually the German expression for Pentecoast so as you can guess it's a annual event to bring together afro culture from all over Switzerland.
Besides the many chances to grab some African food, my personal highlight is always the sunday night when great African artists such as Angélique Kidjo or Mory Kanté show their impressive live performances at the official concernt night.
This year's line up was a bit pared-down compared to the previous years but it was still a wonderful evening with a lot of energy. The line up included the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra feat. Breis & African Boy, Sally Nyolo and the great Keziah Jones. At the zenith of the evening all artists performed together and it was simply impressive! Find some visual impressions below..
